What to Do If You Notice an LPG Smell

A calm, safety-first sequence to follow if you suspect an LPG leak at home.

LPG has a distinctive added odour so that leaks can be noticed early. If you smell it, act calmly and prioritise safety over investigation.

  • Avoid flames, smoking and anything that could create a spark.
  • Avoid switching electrical items or lights on or off.
  • If it is safe to do so, ventilate the area by opening doors and windows.
  • Leave the area and keep others away.
  • Contact the appropriate emergency services or a qualified professional from a safe distance.

Do not attempt to locate or repair the source yourself. Only return once a qualified person confirms it is safe.
